My silver string has darkened, what should I do?
Silver strings can discolor due to the sulfur content in the air and the effect of UV light. If a silver string becomes dark, this has no effect on sound, response or handling – it is simply an optical change. The dark surface must not be cleaned with chemical or coarse mechanical means (steel wool), as this will damage the string. Microfiber cloths should be used to remove any light dirt or sweat, but this will not make the dark surface lighter. However, as you play, the string will become lighter again on its own. If a silver string comes into contact with chlorine, white stains occur on the surface. These are called milk spots. This has no influence on the sound or handling too.
