Why do some E-strings have a synthetic sleeve?
The synthetic sleeve has a number of functions: firstly, it protects the bridge, as E-strings tend to cut into the bridge over the course of time. In addition, it can make the E-string sound warmer and sometimes helps to reduce the whistling of the E-string. If you don’t want to use the sleeve, you can simply remove it.
